recreates 1930's Hollywood, complete with gangsters, Nazi spies, and the growth of the Age of
Aviation. Young pilot Cliff Secord stumbles on a top secret rocket-pack and with the help of his
mechanic/mentor, Peevee, he attempts to save his girl and stop the Nazis as The Rocketeer.
Stars Bill Campbell and Jennifer Connelly. Seville Diner follows the movie - 289 Broadway,
Westwood, NJ. (approx. 9:15 to 10:30, sometimes later).

intrigue novel. This month's book is The Big Over Easy by Jasper Fforde. Fforde's whimsical fifth
novel, his first not to feature literary detective Thursday Next, is consistently witty, but its conceit—
putting a criminal spin on nursery rhymes—wears a bit thin. Det. Jack Spratt, the dedicated but
underappreciated investigator in the Reading, England, Nursery Crimes Division, is depressed
because the court finds the three little pigs "not guilty of all charges relating to the first-degree
murder of Mr. Wolff." Working with an ambitious young detective, Mary Mary ("Quite Contrary"),
Spratt later takes on the case of "fall guy" Humpty Dumpty. Fforde crafts a police procedural out
of this bizarre alternative universe that prizes, as The Eyre Affair does, literacy (detectives, for
example, garner recognition less for solving crimes than by writing articles about cases for the
likes of Amazing Crime Stories or Sleuth Illustrated). While it can be charming to encounter Mrs.
Hubbard or Tom Thomm or to hear Spratt bemoan "illegal straw-into-gold dens" in this unusual
context, the novel's broad satire overshadows elements like plot, conflict and characterization.
The result is unusually clever. For additional information click http://www.bordersstores.

Author Sarah Beth Durst grew up in Northboro, MA, a town in central Massachusetts which (she
claims) was temporarily transformed into a fairy tale kingdom for several days in 1986. These
events later inspired her novel, Into the Wild, as well as her paralyzing fear of glass footwear. For

Rainbows End by Vernor Vinge. A multiple Hugo Award winning author (A Fire Upon the Deep; A
Deepness in the Sky) and former professor of mathematics at San Diego State University, Vernor
Vinge writes as if he's spent some time in 2025. This novel's setting, contemporary with the
author's Fast Times at Fairmont High, is one of instantaneous technology where accomplished
hackers wield profound influence. Reviewers applaud Vinge's avoidance of science-fiction traps
like information dumps and rootless "techno-bedazzlement" in favor of emotional storylines and
plausible—and sometimes frightening—insights into where technology is moving humanity. For
