The latest: Stephen Spinosa posted about Triumph of the Will (1935).
This post created interest and many posts. Good job Steve!
Yesterday Jim and I were able to borrow a dvd copy of the famous
documentary Triumph of the Will, which was directed & edited by Leni
Riefenstahl in 1935. We watched it yesterday & today. Miss Riefenstahl
tells the story of the National Socialist(i.e. Nazi)Party Congress
meeting held in Nuremberg,Germany in 1935. There is no formal
narration for the movie, just a series of events unfolding from
beginning to end. The film starts with a plane flying through the
clouds until it gets to the little town of Nuremberg, all decked out for
the NSP Congress meeting (lots of banners with the famous swastika
all over the place). The plane lands to a crowd of screaming people
and out of the plane comes Adolf Hitler(the supreme chancellor)
followed by Joseph Goebbels and other henchmen. Hitler is then taken
to the hotel, where he goes in to register. As night falls, a military band
plays music to end the day. The 2nd day opens with people getting
up and washing, putting on clothes, then heading over to the building
where the General Session is about to begin. Rudolf Hess opens the
session by praising Hitler, then is followed by a montage of speakers
who lay out the details on the Nazi regime. At one point Infrastructure
is mentioned as one of the speakers explains how 52,000 are working
to keep the Autobahn clean and functioning properly!!! Then the rest
of the picture is filled with various parades and ceremonies(including
two speeches by Adolf himself), until it ends with a parade back thru
Nuremberg which ends the film. There is nothing overtly offensive
here(except for Adolf's speeches), and you can judge for yourself how
bad the Nazi's were. My Grade: A.
Todd, Gene, Mark, James Smith and several other chimed for a lively
thread that contained historical facts, dates, events and even movie
recommends of a similar content.
Midnight in Paris: The new Woody Allen film came out on DVD. Most of
the libraries had it checked out, but Washington Township had it as a
rental for a dollar. This is the first film of his that I've seen in quite
awhile. Charming and lovely to look at. He wrote and directed it. Owen
Wilson plays the part Woody would have played years ago, with Rachel
McAdams costarring. Very nice. Grade: B+. (Chris H)
People's Choice - what our members had to say about a recent winner:
The Dependants - This film was very nicely done. George Clooney was
the main cog, but his kids and friends in the film were also good.
Nothing really special, but worthwhile. B+ (Chris H)
*Additional review from Gene McGrath: I also enjoyed this film - the
kids did a great job - convincing acting, decent story.
