Post Meeting Write-up
A good time was had by all at the first installment of the new SFSNNJ speaker series,"FACE THE
FICTION" held last night at the Borders Books & Music in the Garden State Plaza in Paramus. The
first hour and 45 minutes was an informal meet & greet social overseen by Lord Todd V.
Ehrenfels with discussions of various & sundry subjects. At 7:45 Todd gave a brief overview of the
July Events Lineup for the society and introduced some of the moderators present at this meeting
for each group (These individuals will compromise the SFSNNJ council of Moderators who will
handle any questions complaints or problems that may arise in the future). Afterwards Todd
passed the baton to Ann-Marie Brown,FTF co-moderator, who then introduced Joseph Macchia,a
make-up & special effects artist noted for his work in Dogma, the TV show Monsters, etc. Mr.
Macchia began his talk by explaining how he had gotten into the film business. He contacted
veteran Make-up artist Dick Smith thru the Famous Monsters of Filmland Magazine's "Send a
Birthday card to..." program. Dick then invited Joe to call him up
and he was enrolled in a make-up correspondence class & put on a roster of budding make-up
artists. On of the film producers liked what he saw & hired him to work under the supervision of
another veteran make-up artist Vince(whose last name I can't remember). The rest is history.
Mr.Macchia discussed some of the differences between working in film and television and
showed off some of his props from various films (an arm from Zombie Hunting, three molds
of Ben Affleck's head from Dogma, some molds of Linda Blair's face from The Exorcist). He also
told stories of his experiences working on SNL & The Last Of The Mohicans (with Daniel
Day-Lewis) which he says is his favorite film of all the ones he's worked on. Many good questions
were asked up until closing time. Kudos to Ann-Marie, Todd & Jo for a great opening event!!!
